Episode 1 - Present Sense Impression: "He's yelling right now!"
The giant oak tree behind LIP University had seen everything — breakups, makeups, study sessions, and the occasional meltdown during finals week. But today, it was hosting premium-grade gossip.
Four best friends — Maya, Jules, Trevor, and Lena — sat in their usual circle, backpacks tossed aside, iced coffees sweating in the August heat.
And Trevor.
Trevor looked like he had been WAITING for this moment.
He leaned in, lowering his voice even though no one else was around.
"Okay... so you know Marcus and Talia, right?"
All three nodded. Marcus and Talia were that couple — cute on Instagram, but chaotic in real life.
Trevor continued, eyes wide:
"Last night... they had the BIGGEST argument. And I heard everything. Like literally as it was happening."
Maya gasped. "Wait — you mean like present tense? Like you were hearing it LIVE?"
Trevor nodded so hard his curls bounced.
"YES. I was in my kitchen making ramen, and suddenly I heard Marcus yelling, "I DIDN'T SAY THAT!' And Talia shouting back, "YOU ALWAYS DO THIS!" And I'm standing there like — oh my gosh, this is happening RIGHT NOW."
Lena clutched her iced latte. "Trevor. You're his neighbor. You had FRONT ROW SEATS."
Trevor raised his hand like he was swearing an oath.
"I did. And I swear, I was giving the police updates AS IT WAS HAPPENING. Like, the dispatcher was still on the phone, and I'm whispering, "He just threw something... okay now she's crying... okay now he's walking out the door."
Jules blinked. "So, you were basically a live reporter."
Trever shrugged. "Pretty much."
Let us tie the pieces together:
Maya, the unofficial law nerd of the group, tapped her notebook.
"Guys... this is literally Present Sense Impression."
Everyone stared.
She explained.
"When someone describes something as it's happening, or right after it happens, the law says that's actually trustworthy. Why? Because they don't have time to lie, exaggerate, or make up a story. They're just reacting."
Trevor nodded proudly. "Exactly! I didn't have time to think. I was just saying what I saw and heard as it was happening."
Maya smiled. "And THAT is why Present Sense Impression is a hearsay exception. It's like catching someone's words in the moment — raw, unedited, no filters."
Lena laughed. "So, Trevor's ramen night play-by-play is totally admissible.
Trevor raised his iced coffee like a trophy.
"Ladies and gentleman... my gossip is legally valid."
Doctrine:
Present Sense Impression = Someone describing something as it happens or right after it happens.
No time to lie. No time to think. Just pure, unfiltered reality. Just like Trevor's breathless update to the police.
