The oak tree was already buzzing before the four best friends even sat down. It was one of those mornings where the air felt electric — like campus gossip was vibrating through the leaves. 

Maya plopped first, fanning herself dramatically. "Trevor, you better start talking. You said you had more tea about Marcus and Talia." 

Trevor grinned like he'd been waiting all night for this moment.

"Oh, I do. And this part; this part is CRAZY."

Jules leaned forward. "Crazier than you giving the police a live play-by-play?"

Trevor nodded. "Oh yeah. Because this time... I wasn't just listening. I SAW something."

Lena gasped. "Trevor. What did you see?"

Trevor took a deep breath, then burst out: 

"OKAY SO — Marcus stormed out of the apartment, right. And he SLAMMED the door so hard the hallway shook. and I swear, I jumped like five feet. I literally screamed, "OH MY GOSH HE JUST SLAMMED THE DOOR!"

Maya blinked. "You screamed that? Out loud?"

Trevor nodded. "Yes! I didn't even think. It just came out. Like — my heart was racing, my ramen almost fell out of my hands, and I yelled it before my brain even caught up." 

Jules laughed. "So, you basically had a mini heart attack." 

Trevor threw his hands up. "YES. And the dispatcher heard me! She goes,"Sir are you okay?" And I'm like, "HE JUST SLAMMED THE DOOR SO HARD I THINK THE WALL CRACKED!"

Lena covered her mouth, "Trevor... that's literally the definition of panic."

Trevor shrugged. "I was stressed! It was loud! And I didn't have time to think. It just exploded out of me." 

Let us put the pieces together:

Maya pulled out her notebook again, tapping the page. 

"Guys... this is Excited Utterance."

Everyone stared.

She explained:

"When something shocking or scary happens, people blurt things out without thinking. Their emotions take over. And the law says those blurts — those 'OMG!' moments — are usually trustworthy."

Trevor nodded. "Exactly! I didn't plan it. I didn't rehearse it. I wasn't trying to make a story. I was just reacting."

Maya smiled. "And THAT is why Excited Utterance is a hearsay exception. Because when you are startled, scared, or overwhelmed, your mouth moves faster than your brain. You don't have time to lie." 

Jules pointed to Trevor.

"So, your scream is legally admissible.

Trevor raised his iced coffee again.

"Ladies and gentleman... my panic is evidence." 

Doctrine:

Excited Utterance = Someone blurting out something while they're still shocked or stressed by an event. 

Emotion first. Thinking later.

Just like Trevor's hallway freak-out.
