Trevor laughed. "Oh YES."

He flipped his notebook again.

"Talia told the nurse, 'Marcus said he was going to leave me, and my friend said she saw him packing a bag."

Maya clapped her hands.

"That's hearsay INSIDE hearsay."

Jules blinked. "So, is it allowed?"

Maya nodded.

"Only if EACH layer has its own EXCEPTION."

She drew a sandwich in her notebook.

Layer 1:  Talia's statement to the nurse --> Medical Treatment Exception

Layer 2:  Marcus' statement --> Then-Existing Mental State

Layer 3:  The friends' statement --> Present Sense Impression

"If every layer is trustworthy, the whole gossip sandwich comes in."

Trevor raised his iced coffee.

"Ladies and gentleman... layered gossip is layered evidence."
